Promoting integral and contextualized early childhood development by nurturing and empowering

playful-minded educational communities around the world

OUR PURPOSE

Our goal is to change how schools, families, and institutions think about children and create a conscious and playful community of practice that strives for equal education from birth.

WHO WE ARE

Playful Minds is a global consortium of 2 early childhood specialized organizations and 25 implementing partners throughout Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, who work collectively to strengthen early childhood educational support systems and promote local conscious leadership in disadvantaged communities.

WHY NOW?

Children in disadvantaged conditions are failing to develop critical skills, and adults are failing to break vicious cycles, so we must act. The cost of inaction is high - poverty, malnutrition, insecurity, gender inequalities, violence, environmental issues and poor mental health of caregivers, putting more children at risk every day.

In the search of solving these urgent issues, Playful Minds was designed to focus on: 1. Opportunities for early learning and 2. Responsive and adequate care. We are confident that by addressing these issues in which we have experience and capacity for innovation and growth, we can set up an immediate collaborative scenario with the educational communities that are already working on these issues, as well as local governments, organizations, and other stakeholders, in order to start seeing rapid and tangible results.

THE PROBLEM

Globally and historically, children's needs and rights have been neglected. Information is scarce on the importance of the first years of childhood as the foundation-phase of our lives. Parents and teachers in the early childhood ecosystem receive limited developmentally appropriate training, and there is insufficient attention paid to the treatment and healing of childhood trauma in adults. There is almost no work done to change the mindsets, beliefs, and attitudes surrounding children. This leads to endless cycles of rejection, abuse, and violence for children.

OUR SOLUTION AND APPROACH

Children are shaped by their early experiences, and we believe that training and supporting adults, especially in vulnerable contexts, to provide healthy, safe, loving, and fun environments and learning experiences, which foster social, emotional, cognitive, creative, and resilience skills in children, we can see transformative short- and long-term results within the early childhood ecosystem. Our solution depends on creating a worldwide community of children, teachers, families, and institutions that are aware of the challenge and their role in solving it. We strive to foster creativity and build resilience by working together with communities.

DIVERSITYANDINCLUSION-1.png

Embracing our network approach, we believe those with personal experience of the issues we're trying to address should guide and lead this work. In addition to valuing diverse experiences, we strive to foster an environment in which all participants feel recognized for their contributions and have an impact on the progress of our initiative.

Our aim is to break colonizing education schemes based on methods that are not designed or implemented in conjunction with the community. 25 countries from 5 global regions are participating in this initiative with the goal to develop an action plan that is truly beneficial for global children in a contextualized manner bringing together diverse and inclusive intersectional perspectives.
